UX & UI Leader.
In this market, I have been told to sell myself as a specialist. But I’m a generalist and proud of it. Or am I?
-
Musicians, at least the great ones do this too. The most lauded and praised do not specialise. They use all the tools they have (literally and figuratively) to create. I give you - Prince. Stevie Wonder. Beck. David Byrne. Tom Waits. They use the best tools available to create what is needed, but also to experiment, test and have fun. This is when the magic happens.
It follows then that the best designers will do this to get to the gold. You should use whatever is needed to fulfil the brief. It seems that in a down market/economy, employers should not look for the specialist. They’re too expensive. Employers can save costs by getting the most bang for the buck and hiring a few people who can do a lot with some specialisms (or where your passion lies) thrown in for good measure. Prince could jam with any band and make them better. Because he had the skills, talent and experience.
In this exalted company, I’ve always been proud to be a generalist. Not because I’ve wanted to do that but because I’ve needed to. Get the job done and done bloody well.
But, weirdly I find myself leaning towards being a UX specialist because this is where my passion lies.
It’s been a natural progression from all my experience. I love it. So I’ve decided… I WILL have a speciality, but I will also be very well-rounded... I just can't help that. Jack of all trades master of some
So, interview me and get to know me and please use the years of experience I’ve put in to help you make your product amazing.
